Conversation Starter: Why is Evan Ross Katz so famous for making simple memes?

You’re getting The Friday Dump on a Sunday and for that I am sorry. But when I tell you, I ran out of gas this week and my brain shut down in a way I’ve never experienced, you just have to believe me.

The last week of my life was certainly one of the coolest and craziest yet. From David Beckham in Ft. Lauderdale, to taking the red eye back to LA on Sunday (which was delayed and omfg a delayed red eye was tough dude) and landing around 1:30am to sleep a few hours and then drive 1.5 hours to The White Lotus Four Seasons experience. And it didn’t stop there, I had to come back to LA, head to another dinner with Ilona and Olivia Maher and then yes, back to TWL the next morning. By then it was Wednesday and I couldn’t tell you where I was or what was going on.

It was nice to feel normal this weekend

But we’re here and my Oura Ring tells me I’ve recovered! And there’s MUCH to discuss in the world of pop culture so let’s dive in.

Everyone’s a Substacker Now

This week, it feels like every creator I know finally got on Substack – Welcome friends! This is a safe space. I can’t be too certain but I feel like the latest TikTok ban scare combined with Substack hosting an LA IRL creators / writers event a couple weeks ago, had people perking their ears up to our precious little corner of the internet. It feels like people are hedging their bets that this will be the next platform to blow up and everyone’s hoping to be the next Charli D’Amelio or Addison Rae – but make it creative writing – so here we are.

We’ve also seen an uptick in brands joining the platform, so I’m going to say what I always say, which is, “Watch this space!” This could be a future Business of Culture article.

Somewhere in the blitz that was the past week of my life, I happened upon some Twitter drama involving Evan Ross Katz. If you’re not familiar with Katz, he’s a content creator and writer, who is best known for turning memorable quotes from movies, shows and culture into memes on his Instagram. Personally, I find Katz’s posts fun, easily shareable and I didn’t really think about the fact that he’s not creating original content. I appreciate what he’s been able to build and I know for many of us, he’s seen as a solid figurehead in the pop culture creator zeitgeist.
